Each year street painters, also called madonnari, transform the sprawling Mission Plaza here in Santa Barbara for a unique festival. The I Madonnari Italian Street Painting Festival has these artists create large scale images in the plaza with 150 different vibrant colors. The festival originated in Grazie di Curtatone, Italy and is the first Western festival here in the states. The festival will benefit the Children's Creative Project, a local nonprofit arts center and education program. You will be able to see the works of art in progress as they are made from the incredibly skilled painters. The I Madonnari Italian Street Painting Festival takes place this year May 27th through the 29th and is free to attend.
