Museum History and Collection
The Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum is a passion project of its founder, Virgil Elings. Elings has been an avid collector of motorcycles for over 20 years, and every motorcycle in the museum is part of his private collection. The collection favors racing motorcycles, but truly encompasses the history of bikes, ranging from a 1910 FN to modern makes and models. At the museum, you will find familiar names such as AJS, BMW, Ducati, GIlera, Moto Guzzi, MW, Norton, Triumph, Velocette, and Vincent!
This motorcycle museum in Solvang prides itself on keeping the collection fresh by rotating out the displays each month, so every time to visit, there is something new to see! In addition to rotating the motorcycles on display, the museum also occasionally sells pieces from the collection in order to purchase new acquisitions. If you fall in love with a bike at the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum, you may be able to make an offer and take it home with you!
Highlights from the Collection
The 1955 AJS 7R is a museum favorite. This motorcycle was a Gran Prix racing bike from the 1950’s. It was given the nickname of the “Boy Racer,” since at 350cc, it was junior to the 500cc class of racing motorcycles.
The 1936 BMW R12 is a notable part of the collection. This motorcycle was built pre-WWII, and can be seen in many newsreels from the era. In fact, the Army admired this motorcycle so much for its reliability that they asked Harley Davidson to copy it!
A stunning example of Italian design, the 1974 Ducati Sport is one of the first Ducati V twin models which made the brand famous. The 90 degree cylinders and clean lines make this a beautiful motorcycle.
