The grace period is over. Summer has officially arrived all over the world! Planning a vacation during the hot and muggy months of summer can often be an experience you wish could have taken place in the cooler months, but when you plan a Santa Barbara vacation, you’re guaranteed an awesome time, no matter what the temperatures are outside! It doesn’t hurt, however, that summer in Santa Barbara is temperate and even cool, but on those days when the red line does climb over the 85 degree mark, these will be the best things to do in Santa Barbara to keep you cool and happy!

Head to the Beach

The sun is shining, the sky is blue, and the water is perfect at the beaches of Santa Barbara, beaches that are the most beautiful in the world. Can you give us any reason why you shouldn’t spend a day or two enjoying the cool sensation of ocean water against lightly tanned skin? We didn’t think so, and if you’re feeling the burn of abnormally high temperatures, there’s nothing cooler!

Visit a Museum

The history of Santa Barbara is a rich and compelling one, and getting a peek into our past with a museum tour is one of our favorite ways to kill some hours on a hot summer afternoon. The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History lets you explore our natural side and if art is more your thing, The Museum of Contemporary Art will keep you enthralled for hours!

Grab a Beer

Cold beer and a hot summer day goes together like peanut butter and jelly; each are fine on their own, but mix them together and you create something magical! The Lama Dog Tap Room & Bottle Shop is our current favorite, but every brewery in the area has something special to offer, so if you’re out and about and happen to see one that piques your interest, go ahead and check it out!

Rent a Paradise Retreats Home with a Pool

Nothing beats a swim under the stars, and if you have rented one of our homes with pools, you can enjoy their cool comforts ANY time of the day. Greet the morning with a splash or say farewell to the day with a quiet float as the stars twinkle overhead; there’s never a wrong time to take a dip when the pool is in your own backyard!

All the unique things to do around Santa Barbara make this a very special place. The average day in Santa Barbara takes a whole new life than the average day in most places. Gorgeous beaches, a bustling downtown, and weather that is always perfect make for the perfect place for any number of fun activities. Any bucket list worth its salt should have a few Santa Barbara items on it. While there are countless amazing ways to spend a day here, there are a few things you absolutely cannot miss.

Take a Day Trip to the Channel Islands

You can see the Channel Islands looming in the distance from the coast of Santa Barbara. From this vantage point, you cannot quite perceive the amazing beauty of these islands, but visiting them is a one of a kind experience. You can only access these islands by boat, and you better bring everything you need because there are no services on the islands. But once you are out here, you can enjoy beauty and peace as you can nowhere else. Countless miles of undeveloped coastline are available for swimming, surfing, or just soaking up some sun. You can go kayaking, hiking, and even stay the night for some of the best camping you can find on the west coast of the United States.

Sailing – Things to do Around Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara is unlike almost every other destination on the west coast because the coastline runs from east to west. This results in some of the best waters for sailing. Spending a day gliding along the calm blue waters of the pacific provide for some of the most beautiful moments that you can imagine. There are plenty of sailboat charters that will take you out for a voyage with drinks and dinner, but there are also numerous opportunities to learn to sail. This provides for an unforgettable experience.

Take a Swim at Red Rock

Hiking Red Rock Trail is one of the best things to do around Santa Barbara. Hiking this trail along the Santa Ynez River is an amazing experience in and of itself, but most people make this two-mile trek for the wonders that it leads to. You will find a natural swimming pool surrounding by breathtaking rock formations. It is great for spending a blissful day swimming and cliff diving safely into the cool waters. This is a very popular spot, but you can find more secluded pools if you continue a bit down the trail.

For each of these items, there are a dozen more amazing ways to spend a day here. Taking advantage of the beauty of this area is one of the greatest ways you can fulfill any bucket list. Try these adventures out and countless more waiting for you in Santa Barbara during your stay with Paradise Retreats!

It can be so difficult to choose from the many exciting and relaxing activities offered in Santa Barbara, so forgive us for making the choices a little harder, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t tell you about some things going on next week! If you’re going to be in town the second week of August 2016, consider some of these things to do in Santa Barbara, CA; they’re not going to be around for long, so they’ll be extra-special inclusions, especially if you’re a recurring visitor (or hope to become one)!

August 7th: Old Spanish Days Fiesta 2016

If you’ll be here on August 7th, you’ll be just in time for the last day of the Old Spanish Days Fiesta. This annual tradition celebrates the many interwoven cultures—American Indian, Spanish, and Mexican—that predated the arrival of Caucasians in Santa Barbara, as well as the spirit and customs of the American settlers who first made contact with them. On Sunday the 7th, Our Lady of Guadalupe Mercado will host authentic—yes, homemade—cuisine and entertainment from 11 a.m. until 9 in the evening. Just west of Stearns Wharf you can enjoy the Fiesta Arts and Crafts show from mid-morning until evening. And to really feel cultured in all senses of the word, head over to the free West Coast Symphony concert at the Santa Barbara Courthouse Sunken Gardens at 3:30 p.m.

All Week: Sense and Sensibility on Stage

For just a few weeks, the Pacific Conservatory Theater is performing a live reenactment of Jane Austen’s beloved classic, Sense and Sensibility. Not just a love story, the timeless work portrays two sisters looking for love in different ways—one using her head, the other her heart. Tickets for the evening of humor, drama, and romance cost between $44 and $50, with discounts for seniors, students, and children.

August 8th: Famous October

Live at Soho, this indie-folk duo will be performing at 7 p.m. on the 8th. Based in Switzerland, the duo consists of an American woman and a Swiss man who have been performing since 2012. Admission is only $15 per person. They’ll only be in town for one night, so catch them while you can, and get a refreshing break from your typical pop music!

August 13th: Rare & Fine Wine Lifestyle Auction Lunch

While the Central Coast Wine Classic actually lasts from the 10th to the 14th, this anticipated event bears special mention. Held at the Nesbitt Polo Estate, the auction is a must-attend for wine aficionados. The auction preview starts at 10 a.m. and goes until noon. The auctions—some live, and some silent—proceed from 12:30 to 5, enjoyed alongside a fabulous luncheon. Admission to the event is $175. This event is popular, so register early!

All Week: Puja and Piety at the Museum of Art

This exhibit is almost on its way out, so if you’re a fan of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and haven’t been yet—or a fan of South Asian art—make sure to come here before you leave for the week! The exhibition examines and celebrates iconography of the three native South Asian religions in a variety of mediums, including statues, temple hangings, and meditation diagrams. It’s a fascinating look for any amateur anthropologists or those curious in eastern religions.
